Heater problem
2001 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

When I first crank the car in the mornings and it has warmed up enough to turn on the heater, the car gets nice and toasty on the inside. Within a few minutes, cool air starts blowing instead of heat. If I turn the heat system off for a few minutes, then turn it back on, I get lukewarm air coming out. This only lasts a a minute or two before the cold air starts blowing again.

The temperature gauge is sitting half way between hot and cold, in the normal position and stays in that position while the car is running.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I have a car repair manual for this make and model, but can not find anything that fits my problem.
