1998 Mercury Sable breaks down once a week.

Engine Performance problem
1998 Mercury Sable 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I am wondering what could possibly be the problem. About once a week my car will not start and then after about an hour it will start again and run like nothing is wrong. It usually does this after I have driven it for a while but I am afraid that it will break down when I am driving could you please give me an idea of what it might be so I can try to have it fixed.

does it crank but no start
or no crank and no start
check and clean battery terminals
check relays
check starter
