1997 Mercury Sable Transmission stuck in higher gear

1997 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

The car had been siting for over a year. We drove it to the store and it was fine till the trip home when the car suddenly was going real slow even with the pedal to the floor and the RPMS were revving real high.
