1997 Mercury Sable battery died and cant unlock doors

1997 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Automatic

I had the car dropped off at my work so I could get home and when i went to start the car it made a noise then died. it would not turn over. I think the battery is dead but when closed the door to get out and look at the engine the door was locked and when i went to unlock it with the key i wasnt able to.. what causes that to happen?
