1996 Mercury Sable Shifting/Brake Light Quirk

1996 Mercury Sable Automatic 114000 miles

Ok, so my car won't shift out of Park unless I turn the ignition to the first notch, pop it into Neutral and then start the car. Along with that(and apparently these two issues are related) my brake lights won't show that I'm braking even though both lights are fine.

What's Going On!!?? >.< and how can I fix it?

this is a easy one. replace the brake light switch, its causing both your problems. also pull on the wires at the plug to make sure one is not broken
