1996 Mercury Sable no drive when warm

My daughters car will not engage the transmission after it warms up, seems like it is in neutral in all settings. I changed trans fluid and filter, took it for a test drive and thought the problem was solved. The car drove fine for about 5 minutes, started shifting hard from 1st to 2nd, then stopped propelling the car completely, like it was in neutral again. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the trans control module. Has the check engine light come on?
