1996 Mercury Sable Battery replacement aftermath

1996 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive

I recently replaced a dead battery. The vehicle sat for several days before this replacement with the very dead battery in place. When I connected the terminals of the replacement the headlights lit, the trunk lid popped, and the horn sounded continuously until the battery was disconnected.

What do I do now?

Once the power is disconnected, it triggers your alarm. Hook up the replacement battery, use your remote to turn off the alarm and unlock the door.
