I have a 1996 Mercury sable v6 engine starter operates intermittently. Example will start when engine is cold drive for 2 to 10 miles then it fails to tuirn over. Battery is new cables look good. I just tried it again drove for 5 miles and the starter will not faiil tried it 15 times each time it started the engine. Yesterday saw smoke small amount coming from the connection hot wire from battery at the starter solinoid. Today works fine.

Do a voltage drop test on the battery cables, look for loose connections/test the starter relay-or do this when it refuses to crank over-hold key to start position and bang on the starter if it kicks over-replace the starter.
