1995 Mercury Sable Wont Go Into Gear

Transmission problem
1995 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1995 Mercury Sable. I parked the car and that evening went to go out. I put the car in drive but it wont go. Can move the shifter but the car wont move. Brake lights work. Tried putting it into neutral then starting the car still nothing. Checked all the fuses. Also checked that the cable is working. Not sure what else could be.

If the transmission is selecting gears and there is no drive i would be thinking that there is a selector valve problem or the transmission oil pump is not working, one question if you select neutral will the car roll with the brakes off?

Yes the car will roll in neutral with the brakes off.
