My 1995 V6 3.0 L Mercury Sable with 165000 miles has just started whining when you take your foot OFF of the accelerator. When it is idling it sounds normal. It acts normal otherwise. It is shifting fine and the transmission fluid is full and red.

It started last week. It was making a jet kind of sound when you accelerated and a small whine when you took your foot off the accelerator. THEN after a couple of days the jet sound stopped and the whine got really loud.

Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks!

Thanks for offering some help. I believe it is coming from the Transmission because it does not do it if I'm in park and rev the engine. It also gets quieter when I'm driving and put it in nuetral, although it does not go away entirely. Sitting in the drivers seat, I can hear it coiming from the left side under the hood.

You could have a carrier bearing problem, This is were the 2 axles go into the transmission. Any fluid dripping out there? Don't forget to vote! You could also have a wheel bearing issue. Try steering a little left or right real quick and see if it goes away! Let me know PM me P.S. Wheel bearing don't usually "Growl" til ya get to 30-35 MPH!
