1995 Mercury Sable Replacing transmission filter

Transmission problem
1995 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 65k miles

When removing the transmission filter the rubber seal did not come out. I should have left the old rubber seal. Instead I cut to pieces and cleaned the inside of the tube where the filter is isnerted with sand paper. Still the new filter would not go in, no matter how much force I apply. What could I do? Thanks.

It could be the wrong part. Any seals in the transmission should be left alone! Use NO sandpaper in a tranny...
