1994 Mercury Sable Battery spaks when connecting positive t

My car has been sitting for few months and battery needed to be replaced. I replaced the battery and when connecting the positive cable, sparks fly and smoke appears at alternater and/or fuse box. What might be the problem?

Have the electrical system checked out for a short circuit that's the only way for that to happen
