I took the car to a mechanic, and after he looked at it he told me that i had a small leak, and my hoses are badly worn. He also said I should replace the whole rack and pinion unit. and said it would cost around 1300 dollars. Is there a another way for me to do this cheaper.

PLEASE HELP.

Locate the worn hoses and replace them . why should you replace the whole rack if it only has a small leak in a hose. locate it , buy the hose and bring it to a shop to have them install it, if you cant do it yourself
