Electrical problem
1990 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I just recently put in a new alternator and just a few days ago, a new starter. I had to jump the car a couple of times but on the last attempt, the negative battery cable started to smoke a bit. What is going on, and what needs to be replaced? The battery has a full charge and the alternator is fine.
