1989 Mercury Sable wont drive in drive

When I put my car in drive it doesnt go any where it just idles it goes in reverse but after hesitation

Your transmission is failing internally. The forward clutch is not applying corerctly. This is probably due to a cracked forward clutch piston.

The bottom line is that you need a rebuild.
