1986 Mercury Sable No forward motion

As I pulled from a stop sign I heard a slight clunk. I have no drive in any gear. It acts like it is in neutral. I have reverse, park and neutral. Can this be an external problem?

Internal tranny failure for sure
if fluids up to mark
check axles !
but I would say internal tranny failure for sure
