Alternator

Hi and thanks for responding. I recently had a battery die on me and I replaced it. My friend told me to start the car and unplug the positive to see if it was the alternator that was bad. When I did it the car stopped running. Is a bad alternator the only reason this could happen?

Also, I recently had a new compressor installed, could this new problem possibly been caused by the mechanic that installed my compressor? Thank you for your time.

I dont think so. I would buy a new alternator and possibly a new voltage regulator

Can I repair that without taking it to the shop? If so, how do I go about doing it? Thank you for your time. My car is a 1996 mercury Sable.

Well. Yes and no. Umm if you dont know what your doing you could (over tighten) the belt to the alternator and I have no idea if the alternator has an internal or external voltage regulator. If I have to guess since ford/mercury is still using stone age electronics I would guess it would be external and that you could replace very easily if you could find it.
