1989 Other Mercury Models trans want go into other gears.

When I wanted to pass around someone, I hit the gas and it didn't go any were instead it just blew out lots of smoke at the rear end. Now it want get but one of two gears. What can I do about this, is there a quick solotion of what. Please help we only have 2 vehicle, but it seam like only 1 now.
