1982 Other Mercury Models Cannot get shift lever out of park

1982 Mercury Zephyr. The floor mounted (original equipment) shifter will not come out of park when the side button on shifter is pressed in. Is there a simple way to check a linkage or spring control that controls the shift lever to see if it broken or bent or is it just rusted?

if you can pull the console up and look at where the button releases the abt switch then you'll be ok but that is abou tthe only way to do it.
