Check the coolant temperature sensor this is the one that tells the computer how hot the engine is and uses it for other purposes. or could be a wiring problem or the gauge itself.

Thanks for your reply (see below). I believe the temp sensor has already been replaced. If the problem is wiring or the gauge itself, can this be fixed without replacing the complete wire harness?
