1998 Mercury Mystique Trouble Getting Transmission From Par

When the button on the transmission stick is depressed it will not allow, or at least stick before allowing me to put the vehicle in gear. Once in gear it shifts with no problem. What could be the issues here? How much will this cost me to have repaired?
