1996 Mercury Mystique brake lights

I just purchased a used vehicle, and already knew I had to replace the altenator with car running but stalling. I then realized that I only have the middle window brake light and not the two main ones.
What do you think might be the problem?
Since one light works, could it be something easy like a fuse or wire to hook back up?
Please let me know what you think I'm getting into.

check that the globes are ok first, then check for power & earths.
