1999 Mercury Mountaineer Will not start

Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Mercury Mountaineer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 55K miles

Replaced the battery and fuel filter. When I spray starter fluid into air intake it will start but dies when fluid is consumed.

Check the fuel pressure if its within specs if okay -check if the injector/s are pulsing
