Engine Performance problem
1999 Mercury Mountaineer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 55K miles

At 55K miles the fuel pump goes out? That seems a bit soon to me? Also, when I had it replaced the mechanic said that it comes as one complete unit not just the pump; does that sound right? The price was over $400 for that unit which I find very high!
I did replace the fuel filter and it ran with starting fluid so I assum it was the pump but at over $400 for the part I was stunned!

Thank
Mark

Believe it. I've seen higher. I hope it was an OEM one, sounds like it.

Aftermarket ones are available that are just the pump in a kit form, but are also undependable.

55,000 is not abnormal, especially if the filter was not changed by 35,000, should have been at 30,000 really.
