2001 Mercury Marquis Thermostat or heater core?

Heater problem
2001 Mercury Marquis 6 cyl Automatic 200000 miles

My car is smoking real bad out of the front windshield defroster and the tempature gauge shoots up quickly to hot. I have had people tell me it is either the thermostat or the heater core and also how easy or hard would it be to fix? Thanks.

Check if the heater core is leaking-dunno how easy to get to yours but its hard to get at times-
