1998 Mercury Marquis timing belt

1998 Mercury Marquis 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

We replaced the timing belt, and pullys, but when we put the new one on, the belt would "walk" or slip. What would cause this?

The marquis had a chain and an 8 cylinder.

What ever you have, look for a pulley that is tilted a bit, tensioner may be weak as well.
