1998 Mercury Marquis timing belt

Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Mercury Marquis 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

We replaced the timing belt, and pullys, but when we put the new one on, the belt would "walk" or slip. What would cause this?
