1996 Mercury Marquis brake lights

1996 Mercury Marquis V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my brake lights are not coming on every time I apply the brakes, some times they do and some times they don't. What would cause this problem?

the brake light switch, just above brake pedal, is most likely out of adjustment or sticking and needs replaced. inspect the brake light switch.
