1987 Mercury Marquis transmission slips

The car shifts fine in the lower gears 1,2,and 3rd but when it shifts from Drive into overdrive the transmissions slips. Do you have any suggestions as to what to check for.

check the transmission linkage rod to the throttle body. there is a plastic clip thaqt usually breaKS causing the rod to pop off. the clip costs about 4 bucks from ford.
