1987 Mercury Marquis Transmission not shifting

The transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd and i think from 2nd to 3rd but i cant tell if and i really cant tell about 3rd to 4th or overdrive it sounds like the engine is running at a high rpm at like 60mph. what might be the problem(s)?? what speeds should it shift at? (i have no rpm gauge)

sounds like its the tranny overhaul shop for you!

the sunshell gear may have broken and that is causing your problem.

if its not the best bet is to have a trans shop mess with it as you need a lift and it is difficult to work on transmissions.
