I have a 1983 grand marquis with 27,000 miles on it.
It is an automatic, 5.8L 351cu in with dual exaust
I have two questions

1. When I turn the defrost and the heat on it admits a steam that smells like coolant? What could be the cause of this?

2. The car will not start without my foot on the brake and idles roughly and will stall when I am driving in stop and go traffic or in reverse. The electrical system seems to work fine. What could cause this?

The first problem, smelling coolant when you put the heat on is most definitely a heater core. Depending where you go, this may be a $150-300 fix for parts and labor but may be semi-lengthy.

I would suggest getting the heater core done ASAP if you plan on keeping the car because what eventually is going to happen is you are going to put your heat on and it will dump anti-freeze all over the floor of your passenger's seat. I have had it happen to me before and it can't be good for your floor carpeting.

The second problem is really wierd. I believe that's usually an ignition problem of some sort, but don't quote me on that.
