EGR sensor

Have a 1996 mercury cougar 4.6 v8. 110,000 miles, I have tried to remove the sensor from the bracket at the firewall with success, but I can't get the two rubber vacuum hoses off of the sensor. Once the sensor is removed there's no slack at all to work the hoses off. I had 0401 computer code come up and was told that I needed an egr solenoid and a an egr sensor. The solenoid was easy, I also replaced the egr valve. But the sensor is frustating. All comments are appreciated.

Before you change the sensor take the erg valve off and see if the channel in there is clogged with soot. If so clear it out right to the throttle body, then clear the code and see if the light comes back on, I have never seen the need to replace ALL these parts at once! Don't forget about me Vote!
