2002 Mercury Cougar digital gas gauge

every 5 seconds it drops a mile on the miles left on the gas gauge wut could this be ?

from when i filled it up to my house with is less then a block it went from 191 to 179 left for the gas mileage

the late model cougar (99 - 02) had this issue. the digital estimated mileage left was not very accurate and jumped around a lot. i wouldn't worry about it so long as the actual fuel gauge itself seems accurate.
