I have a 2002 Mercury Cougar V6 2.5L 70,000 miles that has rear drum brakes. I want to change these to disc brakes. What do I need to change to accomplish this

First you need to see if the mount will be the same on the axle, then you'll need 2 brake hoses, Master cylinder, combination valve, 2 steel lines, new parking brake cables, and oh yeah if you have anti-lock brakes,
Forget it!

Many people freak out about rear discs and no abs, but it sounds not as if the abs goes off whenever you brake. Not to mention the higher tier 2002 cougars had rear discs std. But abs was only optional with the auto transmission. So I would say go for it, but I would recommend you use the stock disc brake components (not an aftermarket kit) otherwise the braking power will shift too much to the rear.
