2001 Mercury Cougar Whats Wrong?

my Car has been stalling out when it is on but just not moving, when it goes to shift gears it will shake. after driving the car there is a weird smell coming from it. the check eingen light is on. on have had this car for 3 months.
help.

Go to Auto Zone or similar have codes read then post in P0xxx format will advise.
