2000 Mercury Cougar Whining noise

2000 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Manual 187000 miles

Hi! My cougar came up with a weird whining sound a few days ago. It comes from the right side of the engine where the drive belts are. Now when I press on the gas pedal and rev it to 3000 rpm the engine will "whine" (sounds like a rusty metal gate opening) out and it will continue to whine until it droppes back to idle. Then it is very very subtle, almost unnoticable. Help would be greatly appriciated!

Check pulleys
I would remove the belt and check the pulleys

Hmmm what is it I have to check for when I check the pullys? Rust?

A rusty metal gate? Are you sure it sounds that bad or are you irritated by it? Could be the belt tensioner. Get some belt conditioner and spray it on the belt when the engine is off. This will either eliminate the sound because you have a "sh!Ty" belt that needs replacing or atl east help you pinpoint the origin of the sound. After you spray it on crank the engine over, stick your ear towards the engine and listen hard. Tell me what happens from there. Gotta be a bad bearing somewhere.

The thing is at idle it doesnt do it. 2-3 thousand its starts to whine. Im guessing there is either dirt somewhere and lack of lube therefor something is grinding. But ill try the belt conditioner. Ill get back to you.

It doesnt sound THAT bad, but its evident like you can hear it inside the car with the windows up.

You are looking for dry bearings.
After removing the belt spin each pulley
by it self
if you have a dry and or bad bearing you should be able to notice and or hear it.

And if it is a bad belt you should be able to see that is all cracked and need to be replaced

Hopefully its not whhat the other guy is saying. A bad bearing caused me to replace my power sterring pump in my Dodge Ram. Just the bearing alone can do it. Its an irritating sound I know.
