My 1999 Mercury Cougar's brake lights won't work. The reverse, running lights, hazards and signals all work.

I replaced all the bulbs and fuses. Still not working.

I was told about some 'brake light switch' by the brake pedal... Can't find it or maybe I see it but can't tell its a switch? Also, don't know what to look for...do I turn it? Replace it? Where do I look?

The car is running great and everything is working fine but the brake lights. (including the small cyclops one on the tail).

I found the brake light switch and took it out. It looks fine. There is a small cable assembly that runs to the back of the switch and another switch just above it.. this joins up into 2 and seems to plug in to something just up under the dash. I ordered a switch, won't be here for a few days, but I would really like that cable assembly from the switch to that connector up under the dash... Don't know what that part is or how to track it down lol. or could it just be the switch is faulty? I don't know...
