1995 Mercury Cougar V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

ok my friend has a 95 mercury cougar and he couldnt get it to shift into gear and when I tried I could get it into gear after a few tries and messing with the lil switch on the break pedal and then the car died not sure y there can anyone help? Thank you.

Car will not start know
if so check the battery and start engine check charging system and alternator
step on brakes and check for brake light if not on remove and replace brake light switch
