Electrical problem
1993 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

i am a widow that got this car from someone that said they had fixed the ignition....the car was free ...and i just hoped for the best the best..there have been so many problems related to the key between lights beeping and seatbelts singing but i figured for free what the heck.....now something new has been added.....the key doesnt stop, it wont start the car and just goes round and round...im guessing it finally broke and really needs to be fixed..is this something i can do myself? i saw some switches on 10.plus dollars??!! Please advise we are a mom and daughter 2 widow home with 2 young kids, killing ourselves to make a nice home good food and the best schools....the car has been a blessing but we are so poor i dont know what to do

thank you so much for the free advice you are the best

Hi carol. first off i am very sorry for your loss.and i am sure your two young ones are very lucky to have people who care so much.and if i were closer i would stop and personally fix this prob. but i am not. so i will try and tell you how to do it.

buy the switch, sit in the drivers seat turn key to the on position. now right under the key there is a hole about 1/8 in diameter you need something to put in that hole like a nail or screwdriver. push in on the pin at the same time slowly turning the key and pulling outward . what you are doing is releaseing a lock pin that holds the switch in .

once the old one pulls out look inside you will see a brass gear that has broken off you need to pull that out with pliers or tweezers whatever you have.

once that is out insert new switch when the switch stops slowly turn key and push switch in the rest of the way turn key off remove key pull on cyl to be sure it does not come out .put key back in test ..

this sounds complicated but the one you have is the simpleist to change. good luck and feel free to write back. ty billymac
