I have a 87 Cougar that when driving 45-50 mph has a bad steering shake or vibration but when the car reaches 60 and above it drives fine. I had the tires replaced and the rear U-joint replaced. A mechanic looked at it and could not find anything wrong with the front end or anything loose on the car. Would love to know if anyone has had this problem. Frustrated Cougar Fan.

Have the front end checked again, you might have a ball joint going bad or to much play in the idler arm. Also check your motr mounts aw well as the transmission mount. Usually at that speed it is either a ujoint or tire out of balance. You might check the front ujoint or joints as well.

Your car doesnt have an idler arm because it is a rack and pinion system but you might want to have your tie rods checked both inner and outer but to me it sounds like a ball joint

One thing I forgot to mention is to put the front tires on the back and the backs on the front. If the vibration goes away it's a tire problem witheither a weight falling off or a tire out of round.
