My 1973 cougar does not go into gear smoothly when starting from a stand still. I don't think it is a too fast idle problem. Is there a vacum that could be of fault? What else could be the problem.

Check U-joints, tranny mounts, and engine mounts.
V acuum modulator on the side of the tranny can be checed to see if it holds vacuum..
