Engine Performance problem
1972 Mercury Cougar V8 Two Wheel Drive

The engine runs great at an Idle. Then you drive it down the road, it losses power. We have replaced the following parts... float, needle and seat, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, coil.

Do you think it is running out of fuel? Have you checked the fuel pump? Also, are you sure the float is set correctly?

no it is not running out of fuel.. we have since my first messade done the following replaced the fuel pump, checked the timing--it was off by 6 degrees.. we think its a carb problem... it appears to be running rich in the fuel area... puffs black smoke out of the side pipes..

If you are getting black smoke, it is running rich. If you can't adjust it out with the air fuel mixture screws, I would recheck float drop to make sure it is adjusted properly. Also, make sure the needle and seat are not allowing fuel to enter the carb all of the time.
