1993 Mercury Capri Heater Smell

I get a smell when the heater is on. It is an unpleasant earthy/animal smell - sort of like a mouse crawled in someplace and made a nest. Would it be a difficult task to get into the duct work to see if there is something that needs to be cleaned out?

It is not an easy job as it best to pull the down the heater assembly to take it apart. The ducting is just under the dash but it is the rest that is hard to get out.
