1998 Mercedes Benz S420 AM radio static

My car radio works in all modes except AM. In am I getting a lot of static, although I can hear the station in the background. The static is in direct relationship with the engine rpms. When the car is off the am radio comes in perfectly. Is there a fix for this problem.

Hi there, i would have all the earth's checked, including the antenna. Ask you dealer about radio suppressors for the alternator, as this is a major cause of interference.
