transmission leak merc 280sl

my 1969 280sl auto transmission has a leak from the torque convertor housing which only seems to be when car is cooling down. leaking fluid is red- yet level and performance seems unaffected, is this likely to result in failure, it is a rarely used classic. also is torque convertor fluid fed from gearbox or independant?

No the gearbox and converter fluid is not seperate. What you describe is the pump seal leaking. Will only get worse...
