I have a 2002 500SL Silver Arrow with what appears to be a hydraulic oil leak near the top of the passenger side A-pillar. It is actually leaking at the sun visor mount and the only thing I can think of is that could be causing it is the latching mechanism for the convertible roof.

What could be causing this and is it something that can be fixed without taking it to a dealer?

Thanks,

Unfortunately this is something that will have to be done at the dealer. This model is notorious for springing hydraulic leaks in the top channels. This will continue to leak until the hydraulic reservior fo the top is dry. Not only that but the fluid is quite corosive and will stain the areas around the leak. This will require removal and replacement of the failed line and is quite an involved job
