Mercedes 300E does not stay on

I have a 1987 mecedes 300E with 168000 miles the car turns on but does not stay on, we put fuel in the carburator and it will turn on again but then cuts off. The fuel filter was replaced last year. Do you have any suggestion.

take off air cleaner, there is a little black box on the side of the air fuel meter, have someone tap on it while turning it over......
