Hi I have a Mercedes 508 diesel van and it wont start, if I open a injector pipe it will run and drive ok then when I turn the engine off again it wont start could it be the fuel filter? There is plenty of fuel in the tank thanks in advance

You may have a blocked filter or an air leak in the fuel system, replace filter and bleed fuel system, report back on any change to the hard starting.

I changed the filter my mate had to tow me to start it I took it for a good run then left it running for half an hour or so shut it off then had the same problem wont start, if I put it in gear then turn the key it will start could this be due to lack of compression?

White smoke in a diesel can be a sigh of low compression, check valve clearances and try and get a compression test done, you will require a diesel comp tester a petrol engine tested will not work.
