I have a 1991 Mercedes 500sl and my engine light is on. I took the car to a local mechanic so he can check the the engine light with a code reader he found out is a code 17 but he has no access to a check and find what the code is. He suspects is the o2 sensors. But I have to be sure is the code for the o2 sensors, I need my car to pass smog and reset the code. I will appreciate any help on this. Thanks

This code 17 is a generic code. This vehicle can be properly diagnosed with a MB hand held scanner. Most dealerships have this tool. I cannot find any info on generic coding as the materials I have are issued for the MB handheld. However, I would never recommend making a repair based off a guess. An O2 sensor is one of the easiest and most profitable parts to replace. They take minutes to remove and are usually worth an hour labor. I would be very suspect of a mechanic that wants to replace an O2 sensor with no fault data to back it up.
