There is whining noise from the rear wheels of the car when accelerating. The noise can be heard even if driving at low speeds. The noise continues even when approaching a stop sign. Could this be a diff problem but there is no oil leak from the diff.

You may be experiencing a worn bearing in the diff which will not cause any sort of fluid leak. If you are hearing this all the time while the vehicle is moving and it is coming from right over the diff I would consider this possiblity.
