2004 Mercedes Benz CLK320 V12 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 14000 miles

heating system in this car doesnt seem to work.... is there a problem or do I not understand the instructions?

If you have dual zone air just adjusting the temp to 80 or 85 deg. should kick on the heater. Keep in mind that a common issue with this vehicle is found in the heater exchange valve which when fails will cause only cool or cold air to come out of the vents.
